Hi gang,
If you know Bushy, you’ll know he’d absolutely hate us doing this.
He’s the bloke who’s always been the first to show up for everyone else, so now it’s our turn to show up for him.
To the Australian motorcycle community, Bushy isn’t just an OG—he’s one of the people who helped shape it.
He’s been the voice on the microphone at some of the biggest FMX events in Australian history, written countless stories for the magazines, was a familiar face throughout the legendary FREERIDER Magazine, founded FishFingered FMX, invented the much-loved fictional character Barry Bermbanger, starred in the cult Aussie series Home Grown Maniacs, spent more than two decades as the Parts & Accessories Manager at City Coast Motorcycles, and became the heartbeat of the Wollongong motocross community. Somewhere along the way, he also became the mate everyone simply calls when they need a hand or just want to have a laugh.
Outside of motorcycles, he’s the Bass Assassin with a fishing rod, one of Jindabyne’s finest on a snowboard, and a fearless heavy-wave charger from Wollongong. Proud driver of the murdered-out Toyota HiAce wearing the iconic number plate #1 RAT, Bushy is one of those rare people who brings laughter, good vibes and genuine friendship wherever he goes.
To many of us, he’s more than a mate.
He’s family.
For decades, Bushy has been the bloke who brings people together. Whether it was at the races, in the pits, on a surf trip, around a campfire or over a beer, he’s the one who makes everyone feel welcome. He’s spent a lifetime giving his time, lifting people up and creating memories that so many of us will never forget.
Today, life has dealt him something none of us ever expected.
Bushy has been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), and over the past week his journey has become even more challenging.
After undergoing major surgery, Bushy is now recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. While his doctors are happy with his progress so far, he remains under close observation and has a long road ahead.
As the effects of the heavy medication have begun to wear off, the reality of the fight ahead has started to sink in. Anyone who knows Bushy knows he’s one of the toughest people you’ll ever meet, but this is a battle that will take time, patience and every ounce of strength he has.
There are still many unknowns. His specialist team will continue to monitor his recovery closely and determine the next stages of his treatment in the weeks ahead. Right now, the priority is giving his body the best chance to heal.
Bushy is currently unable to work, and Kelly is spending every day by his side as they navigate hospital visits, recovery and the uncertainty that comes with a diagnosis like this. While their focus should be entirely on his health, the financial reality of losing two income streams while everyday expenses continue is something no family should have to face.
Our goal is to raise $40,000.
This fundraiser isn’t about fixing everything—it’s about giving Bushy and Kelly some breathing room while they face the toughest chapter of their lives. Every donation helps ease the pressure of rent, groceries, utilities, travel, medical expenses and everyday living costs, allowing them to focus on what matters most: Bushy’s recovery.
The support from this community has already meant more than words can say. Every donation, every message and every share reminds Bushy and Kelly that they are not facing this fight alone.
Bushy has always been there for everyone else.
Now it’s our turn to be there for him.
