Help Burmah "Dixon" Broadfoot Medical Emergency

For those who do not know Dixon and his family, we moved a few years ago to Panama to fulfill a lifelong dream of living a healthier lifestyle while creating a business from scratch, San Carlos Surf Resort. Moving to Panama was a huge leap for him and his family. We continue to pour everything we have into our business to make it successful for us to continue our dream. If you know Dixon, you know he is passionate with every aspect of his life, whether it be work, surf or family. He always gives 110%.

Dixon has been regularly dealing with kidney issues his entire adult life. He has passed over 100 stones, nearly gone in to sepsis, received shockwave lithotripsy along with stents just to list a few of his treatments over the past few years. A few month ago, he underwent double hernia surgery, he was doing great in his recovery and starting to become active again with one of his greatest passions, surf.

Just recently we were on a trip to El Salvador to make a dream come true for his daughter, Dare, to watch the pro surfers compete in the El Salvador competition. A few days into the trip, Dixon started experiencing extreme pain and swelling in one of his legs. After 3 days of pain, we set off to San Salvador to seek medical attention. 12 hours and 3 hospitals later he was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood clot and was sent to the ER for immediate treatment. The doctor was baffled as to why Dixon would have developed a blood clot considering his current state of health was seemingly good. Dixon was prescribed blood thinning injections to help until we could return to Panama and seek medical treatment, the doctor said it is imperative to undergo testing to determine which serious complication is the cause of the blood clot and get on a regiment of blood thinners to prevent the occurrence of a pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke. While we feel that his ongoing kidney issues could be the primary cause to his blood clot, he must undergo extensive exploratory tests to rule out all possible causes and to see what we can do to prevent the further occurrences of blood clots as he regularly passes kidney stones.

The combination of the cost of his hernia surgery and unexpected medical expenses in El Salvador, we are depleted of our savings. Now with the cost of his medication and the need for further examinations and test, we find ourselves in a hopeless situation. The medication alone cost around $120.00 per day (which is estimated $21,000 just in medication cost) and he needs to be on the thinners for an estimated 3-6 months. So far since returning to Panama we have not been able to get into see a doctor due to lack of funds. We are continuing the injections until we can acquire funds to seek further medical treatment. Along with the upcoming expenses for medical care, we are at risk of closing our business which is our only source of income. Dixon is at high risk for injury being on blood thinners and cannot work, he is our builder and handyman here at the Bed & Breakfast. This is all causing so much stress on our family as we try and navigate what we know about his condition, what we will learn and how we will move forward. Dixon is hard headed and competitive in nature, with your support he will fight through this challenge.

We are asking that friends and family to please donate any amount you can and please share to those who do not know Dixon but are willing to help. Dixon does not like to ask anyone for help so another way contribute would be book at stay at our Bed & Breakfast in Panama. You can contact Dixon’s partner, Brooke Broadfoot, directly. Any little bit will help us keep our business and help get Dixon the medical treatment he desperately needs.
