Help a visually-impaired neighbor in Flatbush
Donation protected
Tenants and neighbors living together in a Flatbush building are raising funds for Howard (who goes by Bunny), an immigrant neighbor who has been significantly impacted by COVID-19 and medical expenses.
Bunny came to New York in the early 1990s from Jamaica, and has been a well-known presence in the neighborhood since. He worked at a grocery store and took care of elderly family who lived on Midwood St. About 3 years ago, complications from diabetes led to significant visual impairments, and now Bunny is nearly 100% blind. Because of this, Bunny had to stop working. Due to his immigration status, he isn't eligible for many of the public programs that would provide support to him.
Since being out of work, Bunny has relied on family support to cover his rent, but due to the financial impacts of the COVID pandemic, his family is no longer able to send him any money. He doesn't have any family nearby. Bunny also isn't eligible for any of the COVID stimulus from the federal government.
Bunny is funny, sweet and quiet. He doesn't want to burden anyone, and as a result often has a hard time asking for support. He'll sometimes go many days without food because he doesn't want to bother anyone. This money will mean so much to him, and will make a huge difference in his ability to remain part of the community and stay in his apt, which he shares with two others.
A number of neighbors in the building have been supporting Bunny, but we need a bit more help to make sure Bunny has long-term support. We are raising money to cover a year of rent so Bunny can stay in his current apartment (500/month x 12 months), and some additional funds to cover food and medical expenses.
If you've got a little bit of money to spare, and perhaps are looking for somewhere or someone to support with some of your COVID stimulus, it would make an enormous difference to Bunny.
Thank you for your support.
