In May 2025, my sweet cat Bunny was diagnosed with a food allergy after she started scratching at her face, losing fur, and developing bruising on her ears. After moving her to a limited ingredient diet, I was relieved to see her start to improve. However, Bunny has had a few flare ups since then, and I’ve always taken her to the vet right away when her symptoms returned. Most recently, she began obsessively licking herself and scratching at her face again. The vet ran bloodwork and discovered that Bunny’s red blood count was extremely low—a 15, when the normal is 35. She’s been on medication for a little over a week now, and we’re hoping to see her numbers improve soon. Bunny will need weekly checkups to monitor her red blood count, and she’ll require consistent medication for several months, possibly up to a year. If her red blood count doesn’t improve, she may need an emergency blood transfusion. The costs of her ongoing care are adding up quickly, and I want to make sure I can give Bunny the best chance at a healthy, happy life.
