My name is Adam Dreher. I’ve been a freelance videographer, filmmaker, and photographer for about eight years, and before that I spent twelve years as a teacher. I grew up and still live in rural Kansas. Because of the work I do now, I get to meet people across so many industries, passions, and worldviews. And what it’s shown me is this: there are stunningly amazing people everywhere — and most of them never get to tell their story.
I’ve created several documentaries, a few of them feature-length. Nearly all of them have centered around the Seldom Heard — the overlooked, the quiet, the ones who rarely get the microphone. Those projects didn’t just become films; they helped guide my path.
A few years ago, my brother Craig randomly bought a Step Van. It had its own ridiculous coolness without trying. No one really had a purpose for it — it was just cool. But as we talked and dreamed, a vision started forming in my mind of what something like that could become. My brother’s excitement for the Step Van was infectious. And eventually — to the mild frustration of my bank account — I bought my own, believing this is a journey I’m meant and built to travel.
I want to turn this Step Van into a mobile studio. But more than that, into a place people can go to be heard. My YouTube and social channels, Seldom Heard, are the umbrella where my passion projects live — and where I hope one day many people finally get the space to share what’s been sitting beneath the surface.
I’ve never enjoyed asking for help, especially financially. But to make this happen, I’m inviting others who believe these stories matter. I’m asking people to join this movement — to become better listeners, to value real stories, and to connect through shared humanity.
Our goal is $15,000. That will help transform the Step Van from a blank slate into something intentional. With my background in automotive paint and fabrication — and with the help of friends and family — most of the work will be done by our own hands so every dollar stretches as far as possible. The Step Van won’t be fancy. It won’t be high-tech. It will simply be a comfortable space to sit, slow down, and listen.
Practically speaking, this project starts with bringing the Step Van back to life — inside and out. We’ll be giving it fresh paint, adding insulation, new flooring and walls, building simple benches, installing lighting and storage, and shaping it into a clean, comfortable space to sit and talk. Mechanically, it needs some love too — a full tune-up, working gauges, a repaired windshield, wipers and locks functioning like they should. We’re also working on a simple, reliable way to power the van when it’s parked, so conversations and sessions can happen anywhere the road takes us. We are an open book though, and I will be tracking all our additions and upgrade on our socials. We believe in being good stewards of what we are given.
I envision incredible stories from those willing to share. I envision acoustic Step Van sessions where musicians get to be heard. I envision pop-up concerts with the van as a stage. And I believe there are ideas we haven’t even thought of yet waiting down the road.
I dream of the day the Step Van becomes known — not to make it famous, but so that when it rolls into town, people feel something. Their shoulders drop. They take a breath. And they know that if they step inside, they’ll be heard. That they matter. And that the world will gain something by listening to them.
Join me in this adventure.
