From a Garage in Brisbane to a National Museum: Why Your Support Matters Now
Australia’s intelligence history has always lived in the shadows not because it lacked courage or brilliance, but because the people who shaped it were never meant to be seen. Some of the most extraordinary contributions to our national security came from individuals whose names were never recorded, whose achievements were never celebrated, and whose stories were never told.
One of those stories begins in a suburban garage in Brisbane.
During the early days of Australia’s modern intelligence era, a small group of young women later known informally as the Garage Girls, worked quietly on codebreaking and signals tasks that would shape the nation’s emerging capabilities. They weren’t officers. They weren’t publicly recognised. They were simply clever, determined women who stepped forward when their country needed them.
Working with improvised equipment, handwritten notes, and sheer ingenuity, they helped lay the foundations for the intelligence and cybersecurity capabilities Australia relies on today. Their work was meticulous, essential, and invisible.
Their story is exactly why the National Spy Museum Australia must exist.
These stories matter because they remind us that history is not only made by those whose names appear in official records, but also by those who served in silence, whose skill and sacrifice helped protect a nation. Without a dedicated place to uncover, preserve, and share them, where else will these stories be heard? Where else will they be remembered? Where else will they inspire the next generation to understand the quiet courage behind Australia’s security and freedom?
And it’s why your support matters.
