Abundance Farm is a Jewish food justice farm, outdoor classroom and community building space located in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Farm is a unique collaboration at Congregation B'nai Israel with the Northampton Survival Center and Lander-Grinspoon Academy to support local food security and to create a unique, outdoor learning environment. Each year thousands of people of all ages and from all backgrounds participate in the life of the Farm through hundreds of classes, workshops, festivals, rituals and celebrations. Everything that we grow on the Farm is available for free to the public. Most of the fruit and vegetables we grow are harvested directly by food insecure residents through our free Pick Your Own program.
As we enter our seventh season, we are very excited to launch a new initiative, our own OUTDOOR BAKERY! Bread is fundamental to Jewish ritual and ritual around the world. We have found that there is no better way to both live our Judaism and to connect with our wider community than baking and breaking bread together on the Farm.
Our bread will be made outside on the Farm in our beautiful, wood-fired, cob oven. We will be making and selling challah and other delicious breads every other Friday in advance of Shabbat. One Thursday a month, we will also bake bread and share it freely with the community as part of our monthly Potluck on the Farm. Then, of course, there's matzah bakes for Pesach, Sukkot pizza parties, sufganiyot for Hanukkah, and more!
Our head baker is Sam Coates-Finke . Sam is an incredible baker and educator who brings a passion for using bread baking as a tool to build community. Sam will be assisted by community members.
We are in need of $5000 in capital investment to get the bakery off the ground. Funds will go towards purchasing the equipment essential for building a kosher production bakery at Abundance Farm. Equipment needs include: an industrial mixer, hand tools, work-benches, storage containers, oven tools, and other miscellaneous items.
