-Intentions/Goals
We are building a house for my nephew, Donato. The goal is to create a personalized space that will help with his physical limitations, make his day-to-day tasks more manageable and provide him with a higher level of independence.
THERE IS NO DOUBT independence and capability leads to a logical amount of happiness and an elevated sense of pride and self-worth. This is true for all of us.
-He has undergone an incredible amount of physical and mental turmoil thus far. HOWEVER, as a result of his exceptional mental toughness, he has made the decision to move into the next chapter of his life.
-THE BACKSTORY (Short Version)
In February of 2024, just a few months before his 21st birthday, he was involved in a violent crash. He was ejected from a vehicle and crushed by it.
We were told that he basically died and was revived several times in the helicopter and in the hospital. His injuries were extreme but thanks to a brave friend on the scene, followed by first responders, critical decisions by the LifeFlight Crew, he survived.
Also, big shout out to the ICU Crew at Mosaic in St. Joe, MO.
-THE INITIAL STRUGGLE
Luckily his mind remained intact.
He was in ICU for 6+ weeks! This is when he started to regain the ability to breathe unassisted.
Once medically stable, the next step was to go to specialized rehab center. He is now confined to a wheelchair with limited upper body mobility.
After rehab, his mother, Stephanie, has been his primary caretaker, Bless Her Heart.
-THE NEXT MOVE
Rehab at Madonna Rehab Facility marked the start of the challenging journey of building strength in all parts of his body that his injury will allow. He has been working his ass off to reach his goals. This journey will continue.
Luckily, Donatos Dad is a carpenter. He has started the pre-construction process.
We are hoping to get help from our community to help soften blow on labor BUT will still need to pick up the slack for that and also pay for building materials.
The cost of this project will be below average thanks to people in our community donating their time, but we are looking for some assistance in purchasing materials and other costs related to the construction process. Anything will help.
Many hands make light work and every bit helps. Thank you and God Bless!
