For over 48 years, Pleasant Valley has been a place of welcome, reflection, and natural beauty, lovingly maintained by the Maas family across four generations. Originally a cross-country ski resort and retreat center, Pleasant Valley has continued to offer lodging and a peaceful escape for individuals, couples, and families, even after the passing of David Maas in 2015. David and Louise's dream of sharing this special place with others lives on, as the family remains dedicated to providing a space for soulful enjoyment and connection with God.
Now, the Maas family is working to fulfill a long-held aspiration: building 'David’s Refuge,' a rustic hermitage cabin open to anyone seeking a deeper relationship with God. Inspired by both the biblical David and David Maas, this simple one-room cabin will offer a quiet, technology-free space for spiritual renewal. The cabin will be basic—just a bed, a chair, a desk, and books, and it will be open for three seasons of the year. Guests will be asked to leave behind electronic devices and embrace the peace of the valley. Bathroom facilities will be available nearby at the Brookside Cabin. David's Refuge cabin will be available to anyone seeking peace, God or restoration and it be available without a charge for short stays with a reservation, although donations for upkeep will be accepted.
To make this dream a reality, the family is seeking both monetary donations and volunteer help for construction. As a small family business, any donations are not tax-deductible, but every contribution and act of support is deeply appreciated. Every dollar raised on this "Go Fund Me" page will go into a fund to build this cabin. Not one dollar will go to any other expenses at our business. Your generosity will help create a place where people can find rest, reflection, and hope. Thank you for considering a gift to David’s Refuge and for supporting the ongoing legacy of Pleasant Valley.
We are pouring the concrete for the floor at the end of August.
Thank You! The Second, Third and Fourth Generations of The Maas Family at Pleasant Valley, 18278 SD Hwy 22, Gary, SD 57237 – [phone redacted] - Steven and Sharon Maas
