Every day, I see autistic children and their families facing barriers to communication. As a speech-language pathologist, I’ve learned firsthand, how important it is to slow down, lean in, and listen. The more I listen and respond this way, the more the children - and I - grow in connection, confidence, and communication.

Too often, the responsibility for change falls unfairly on autistic people and others who communicate in ways that may not be typical. As Damian Milton’s Double Empathy Problem reminds us, communication is a two-way street. Therapists, parents, and society all share responsibility for adapting so that everyone can be understood. But right now, even with our best efforts, it’s often difficult and time-consuming for families and professionals to truly understand the unique ways children communicate.

That’s why I’m developing a mobile app designed to help caregivers and speech therapists interpret children’s natural communication patterns and adapt their own styles to support growth. This project is rooted in a neurodiversity-affirming mindset and celebrates children’s authentic voices while fostering collaboration between parents and professionals.

To bring this vision to life, I need to raise $10,000 for the research and development phase. This is the critical first step before applying for a larger grant from the National Institutes of Health.
