In the heart of Mathare, one of Nairobi's oldest informal settlements, a group of passionate young leaders is proving that lasting change begins within the community itself.
Mto Wangu Initiative is a community-led organization working to restore the Mathare River, improve waste management, create green public spaces, empower women and youth, and build climate resilience through locally driven solutions. Rather than waiting for change to happen, the people of Mathare are creating it every day.
Today, these programs operate from a rented space. While it has served the organization well, renting limits what can be achieved and creates uncertainty about the future.
We have a vision to change that.
We are raising funds to build a permanent community hub, a place that belongs to the people of Mathare.
This hub will become a safe, welcoming space where residents can gather, learn, create, and lead change in their own community. It will provide a permanent home for environmental education, youth leadership programs, community meetings, workshops, skills training, research, and creative initiatives that continue to improve life in Mathare.
This includes relocating the current Mathare Roots Library from a rented room into a permanent space where children can continue to learn, grow, and feel safe. Due to overcrowding and disruptive home environments in Mathare, many children are unable to successfully focus on schoolwork at home. The Roots Library provides a safe and welcoming space where they can complete their homework, receive academic support, and discover the joy of reading and writing. Equipped with books, paper, writing materials, and creative supplies, the library encourages imagination while giving children the opportunity to explore the world beyond their community through stories and learning.
The community hub will also provide a permanent home for our Upcyclers' Creative Space, where young people develop practical skills, express their creativity, and transform discarded materials into valuable products. The Upcyclers’ Creative Space encourages innovation, independence, and entrepreneurship by giving youth the opportunity to create items they can sell to generate income and support their wellbeing. It is also home to community-led initiatives such as producing reusable sanitary pads to help address period poverty and improve access to sustainable menstrual products for girls and young women.
In addition, the community hub will include dedicated office space to support the organization's daily operations and a flexible multipurpose room for education, skills training, workshops, community meetings, youth programming, and other community-led initiatives.
Our goal is to create a place that not only meets the community's current needs but continues to grow alongside the people it serves for generations to come.
Imagine a place where:

- Women and girls have access to reproductive health education and resources.
Owning this space means stability. Instead of spending resources on rent, every investment will strengthen programs that directly benefit the community for years to come.
Over the past several years, Mto Wangu Initiative has demonstrated what community-led action can accomplish. The organization has restored sections of the Mathare River, promoted recycling and waste management, created green spaces, supported local research, empowered youth and women, and responded to communities affected by flooding.
Now, we have the opportunity to create a permanent home for this incredible work.
