Help build a school for poor children in Liberia

My name is Christoph, I live in Germany, and I am the founder of a progressive human rights organization called HEARTHS.

HEARTHS, short for “HElping African Refugees  (Residents) To Help ThemSelves” is a project based on the idea of creating an environment in which greater autonomy and self-determination through economic empowerment can be its guiding principles, with its aim to inspire our members to unite and to work together for the common good, helping to improve living conditions for many poor and suffering people all across Africa. Recently we received a great opportunity from one of our new HEARTHS members which will enable us to open up our first HEARTHS school in Liberia. Our new (and very generous) member is allowing us to use their building to house our school which is located in Old Field Community, Upper Johnsonville, Montserrado County, Liberia.

The school will officially start in September of this year and will offer free education and tutoring for underprivileged children in Liberia.

Classes will start towards the end of June , 2021 and will run for three months, leading up to the start of the academic school year in Liberia which is the month of September, also marking the official opening of our school.

The educational program is designed to give students the skills they need so they can grow, develop and thrive academically, creatively and emotionally with individualized instruction. The educational programs will promote moral values by developing nurturing relationships with nature and promoting ways in which gender equality and increased relational/interpersonal skills can be achieved. Recreational activities such as sports, drama, music, dance will also be a core part of our program and will provide a crucial creative and physical outlet for the students. Computer related programs and exploration and encouragement of talents and skills will be foundational as will the acquisition of educational materials (which will take top priority).

The following picture shows our executive director, Lemuel Taylor, with community leaders and the owner of the school building to discuss our progress.

We are planning to start our renovation process during the 2nd week June 2021. During our first stage of renovations, we will only need around $500 for paint supplies and necessary building supplies for chairs and benches.

The owner of the building is making it available to us free of charge, but he will want to see some progress during the next few months and
so we are highly motivated to reach goals that are demonstrable.

We also need to include a meal program, so the children will have access to nutritious food during their time at the school. Following is a projected three-month budget (in $USD) of food costs for the children at our new school, written by our executive director, together with the other organizers of the school:

The feeding program is meant to encourage our children to learn and be happy while they stay on campus from 8:00am to 5:00pm (9 hours, every Saturdays for three months).

Thank you kindly for your interest in this great project, to bring quality education to one of the poorest countries in Africa, and to provide children with a sense of pride, self worth, and passion for learning.

With heartfelt greetings,

Christoph Ebert
