We are raising funds to install a 30’x100’ high tunnel greenhouse on our small-scale farm in Hempstead, Texas.

Over the past year, unpredictable weather and local wildlife have made it increasingly difficult to protect our crops. We’ve experienced multiple freezes—7 in total since October 2025, including a 10 day freeze in January 2026—and have struggled with armadillos and rabbits damaging our seedlings. Each time we attempt to transplant new plants, either a freeze or an animal thwarts our efforts, resulting in lost food, time, and income. We keep trying, learning through trial and error, but after multiple failed attempts to plant a bed of Swiss chard, beets, or cabbage, we have to consider our reliability as a business and our ability to stay afloat. These setbacks not only impact our farm, but also the local businesses and neighbors who rely on us for fresh, organically-grown produce.

A high tunnel greenhouse would be a game-changer for our farm. It’s an enclosed space that allows us to continue to grow organically in the ground while controlling the temperature during hot summers and freezing winters, and keeping out animals. With this structure, we can protect our crops, extend our growing seasons, and provide a more reliable supply of food to our community.

One high tunnel will provide the equivalent of 15 of our current beds, helping us recoup lost production and stabilize our income during the most challenging months. In our first year, we averaged $1200 per bed so the increased capacity alone from the addition of the high tunnel will pay for itself in less than a year. In the worst case scenarios, like this winter, where we might lose 80+ percent of our beds in a bad weather season, we would still have at least 15 protected high tunnel beds, which can equal to $6000-$8000 of revenue. For our small business, that's enough to make the difference between being profitable for the season or not.

ANY dollar amount helps. Your support helps reduce crop loss, strengthens our small farm, and ensures fresh, local food continues to reach our community. This high tunnel isn’t just a structure—it’s a lifeline for our farm and a commitment to a more secure, sustainable food future.
