Wij zijn van Amoukanama. In de lokale Guinese taal Sussu betekent dat: 'iets wat niet breekt, blijft bestaan. Amoukanama is een Belgisch-Guinese vereniging, geboren uit de vriendschap tussen Balla Moussa en Alseny, twee acrobaten die opgegroeid zijn in Matam, een wijk in de Guineese hoofdstad Conakry.

Dankzij hun vriendschap en passie voor acrobatie zijn ze erin geslaagd om de reputatie van hun wijk te veranderen van een criminele buurt naar gemeenschap van artiesten. Ze hebben veel jongeren op weg gezet om hun droom te realiseren en een positieve richting in het leven te kiezen. Daarbij kwamen ze veel hindernissen en vooroordelen tegen, maar dankzij hun overgave, volharding en weerbaarheid, is Amoukanama blijven groeien.

Een volgende stap in dit proces was de ontmoeting met Nathalie: een Belgische die op dat moment ook al een rijk parcours had afgelegd van ingenieur naar paardenartieste. Zij richtten samen Amoukanama op. Het hoofddoel was om een circusschool te bouwen in Guinee en meer kinderen, jongeren en volwassenen te bereiken en te begeleiden. Op dat moment trainden de jongeren nog altijd op het (vervuilde) strand of op houtzaagsel nabij houtzagerijen (tussen stof en plastic). Ondanks het gebrek aan materiaal, veiligheid, hygiëne, lesgevers en bescherming tegen de weersomstandigheden, bereikten de jongeren een hoog niveau in acrobatie. Een niveau dat vandaag ook internationaal gewaardeerd wordt. Acrobaten van Matam (en Conakry) werken momenteel in verschillende internationale gezelschappen of toeren met een eigen show. Dit heeft hun eigen situatie – en die van hun omgeving aanzienlijk verbeterd.

In 2019 zet Amoukanama een groot artistiek project op, samen met de Franse regisseur Antony Weiss. Sinds 2022 is de korte outdoorversie van deze productie – met 10 artiesten op de scène - te zien in België, Frankrijk, Hongarije, Engeland en de Verenigde Staten (waar ze ook de halve finale van America’s got talent haalden). In september 2023 gaat de langere zaalversie in première. Op enkele jaren tijd heeft de groep een interessant en rijk parcours afgelegd en is het enthousiasme om hun energie te delen met een breed publiek alleen maar groter geworden.

Ondanks het feit dat Amoukanama overal ter wereld speelt, is Guinee de basis waar steeds naar terug gekeerd wordt. Het doel is: kennis, ervaring en middelen terugbrengen naar Guinee zodat die iets kunnen betekenen voor de andere jongeren die er elke dag hard werken en trainen in moeilijke omstandigheden.

De bouw van de school blijft daarbij centraal staan. Amoukanama kocht in Maferinyah, nabij Conakry, een stuk grond waarop we een ‘geodesic dome’ – een circuskoepel – willen bouwen waar de acrobaten kunnen trainen volgens de hedendaagse normen. Daarnaast moet er ook een lokaal komen waar er dans- en andere lessen gegeven kunnen worden.

Deze zomer kon Amoukanama een delegatie van Edukado ontvangen: een groep Belgische studenten die geld inzamelden en samen met de acrobaten en bouwvakkers meewerkten aan het klaslokaal. Hun avonturen kan je volgen via de FB van Edukado. Deze uitwisseling heeft ons nog meer gemotiveerd om over onze droom te blijven spreken en geld te blijven verzamelen om hem te realiseren.

In 2022 konden we reeds de funderingen voor de dome leggen en hebben we ook voldoende geld verzameld om een groot deel van de metalen constructie voor de dome kunnen betalen. Nu gaan we er volop voor om het budget dat nodig is voor het transport en de bouw van de constructie bij elkaar te krijgen. Daarnaast hebben we in België ook al een hele container vol circusmateriaal verzameld en willen we die opsturen naar Guinee. De container wordt tweedehands aangekocht en op het terrein geplaatst om later omgevormd te worden tot bureau of woonplaats.

We zijn met dit project begonnen in 2017 en zijn er helemaal klaar voor om het af te werken en eindelijk in onze eigen ruimte te beginnen werken. Dit zal zo veel mogelijkheden scheppen om jongeren te bereiken en hun creativiteit en talent te ontwikkelen! Hello everyone!

We are from Amoukanama, Sussu for 'something that doesn't break, which always lasts. This is a Belgian-Guinean association born of the friendship between Balla Moussa and Alseny, two acrobats who grew up in Matam, Guinea.

Through their friendship and passion for acrobatics, they have managed to transform the reputation of their neighbourhood: from a criminal neighborhood to an artist community. In addition, together they have set many young people on the road to realize their dream and to choose a constructive direction in life. This was accompanied by many obstacles and prejudices, but thanks to their dedication, perseverance and resilience, today there is a tangible result of all their work.

After meeting Nathalie in France (who is Belgian herself and who also had a rich life journey from engineer to equestrian artiste), the three friends founded the association 'Amoukanama'. The main goal was to build a circus school in Guinea and to reach and guide more young people, children and adults. At that time, most young people still trained on the (polluted) beach or on wood sawdust near sawmills (between dust and plastic). Despite the lack of material, safety, hygiene, teachers and protection against the weather, the young people still reach a high level in acrobatics. A level that is also internationally appreciated. Acrobats from Matam (and Conakry) are currently working in several international companies or touring with a show.

Amoukanama was also able to start her own artistic project in 2019 together with artistic director Antony Weiss. The project was named FA and has been touring since 2022 with a shorter outdoor version (35min) and will premiere this month with the theater version in Belgium. It was and still is an interesting and rich journey to experience the transformation of the group and to share their energy with a wide audience.

Although Amoukanama is currently touring in Europe and has since been invited by America's Got Talent, the link with Guinea is still the basis to which they return. The vision is always to bring knowledge, experience and resources back to Guinea that mean something to the other young people who still work hard every day and train in harsh conditions.

This summer, Amoukanama was able to receive a delegation of Brussels students who, together with the acrobats and construction workers, are building a classroom on the Amoukanama land just outside the city of Conakry. You can already follow their adventures via the FB of Edukado.

This exchange has also given us further motivation to keep working on raising funds for the circus school and to keep communicating about our dream.

Specifically, we are building a geodesic dome on our property in Maferinyah, just outside Conakry. In 2022 we had collected enough funds to lay the foundations and we were also able to pay for a large part of the structure. Now we are fully committed to raising the remaining budget for the transport of the dome to Conakry and the construction. In addition, we have already collected a whole container full of circus equipment in Belgium and we want to send it to Guinea. The container will be purchased second-hand and placed on the site to be later transformed into an office or residence.

We started this project way back in 2017 and are ready to finish it and finally start working in our own space. This will create so many opportunities to reach young people and develop creativity and talent. We hope for your support to realize this dream together and make an impact in the world...

Nous sommes Amoukanama, Sussu pour « quelque chose qui ne casse pas, qui existe toujours». Il s'agit d'une association belgo-guinéenne née de l'amitié entre Balla Moussa et Alseny, deux acrobates ayant grandi à Matam en Guinée.

Grâce à leur amitié et leur passion pour les acrobaties, ils ont réussi à transformer la réputation de leur quartier : d'un quartier criminel à une communauté d'artistes. De plus, ensemble, ils ont mis de nombreux jeunes sur la voie de la réalisation de leur rêve et du choix d’une direction constructive dans la vie. Cela s'est accompagné de nombreux obstacles et préjugés, mais grâce à leur dévouement, leur persévérance et leur résilience, il existe aujourd'hui un résultat tangible de tout leur travail.

Après avoir rencontré Nathalie en France (qui est elle-même belge et qui a également eu un riche parcours de vie d'ingénieur à artiste équestre), les trois amis fondent l'association 'Amoukanama'. L'objectif principal était de construire une école de cirque en Guinée et d'atteindre et d'orienter davantage de jeunes, d'enfants et d'adultes. A cette époque, la plupart des jeunes s'entraînaient encore sur la plage (polluée) ou sur la sciure de bois à proximité des scieries (entre poussière et plastique). Malgré le manque de matériel, de sécurité, d'hygiène, d'enseignants et de protection contre les intempéries, les jeunes atteignent quand même un haut niveau en acrobatie. Un niveau qui est également apprécié à l’international. Les acrobates de Matam (et de Conakry) travaillent actuellement dans plusieurs compagnies internationales ou tournent avec un spectacle.

Amoukanama a également pu démarrer son propre projet artistique en 2019 avec le directeur artistique Antony Weiss. Le projet a été nommé FA et est en tournée depuis 2022 avec une version extérieure plus courte (35 minutes) et sera présenté en première ce mois-ci avec une représentation en salle en Belgique. C'est toujours un voyage intéressant et riche pour vivre la transformation du groupe et partager son énergie avec un large public.

Même si Amoukanama est actuellement en tournée en Europe et a depuis été invité par America's Got Talent, le lien avec la Guinée reste toujours la base sur laquelle ils reviennent. La vision est toujours de ramener en Guinée des connaissances, des expériences et des ressources qui signifient quelque chose pour les autres jeunes qui travaillent dur chaque jour et s'entraînent dans des conditions difficiles.

Cet été, Amoukanama a pu recevoir une délégation d'étudiants bruxellois qui, avec les acrobates et les ouvriers du bâtiment, construisent une salle de classe sur le site d'Amoukanama, aux portes de la ville de Conakry. Vous pouvez déjà suivre leurs aventures via le FB d'Edukado.

Cet échange nous a également donné une motivation supplémentaire pour continuer à travailler à la collecte de fonds pour l'école de cirque et à continuer à communiquer sur notre rêve.

Plus précisément, nous construisons un dôme géodésique sur notre propriété à Maferinyah, juste à l'extérieur de Conakry. En 2022, nous avions collecté suffisamment de fonds pour poser les fondations et nous avons également pu financer une grande partie de la structure. Nous sommes désormais pleinement engagés à augmenter le budget restant pour le transport du dôme jusqu'à Conakry et la construction. De plus, nous avons déjà récupéré un conteneur entier rempli de matériel de cirque en Belgique et nous souhaitons l'envoyer en Guinée. Le conteneur est acheté d'occasion et placé sur le site pour être ensuite transformé en bureau ou en résidence.

Nous avons commencé ce projet en 2017 et sommes prêts à le terminer et enfin à commencer dans notre propre espace. Cela créera de nombreuses opportunités pour atteindre les jeunes et développer la créativité et le talent.
