BUFF BAR BRISTOL AND ME
My name is Nathan, and I run a queer-owned nail bar in Bristol called Buff Bar Bristol.
Buff Bar Bristol is a safer and more inclusive space for beauty services. Buff Bar Bristol is a pioneer in providing beauty services for, but not limited to, QTIPOC communities. We focus on delivering accessible beauty services for these communities by crowdsourcing and campaigning. Buff Bar Bristol is also invested in offering ongoing support to marginalised and under-resourced people within the nail industry.
As I'm sure many of you know, the person behind Buff Bar Bristol (me) is bi-racial / queer / working class / Neurodivergent and disabled. This means I have some access requirements that make it challenging to work from my current studio in a healthy way. In addition, I have limited capacity to work, often needing long periods of respite, which is why working as a self-employed nail tech is suited to me.
Although becoming self-employed as a nail technician has been the right decision for me, I have faced significant barriers, resulting in financial hardships and a lack of security (especially over the last few years).
I need more agency over my future not just as a nail tech or a business owner but also as a human being. For the first time, I have secure housing, an occupation that accommodates reasonable adjustments to my needs (Dyslexia, ADHD, chronic fatigue, chronic depression and anxiety) and a chance to invest in myself for a better life. So I would like to create something that belongs to me, a stable space of my own.
THE PLAN
The plan is to build a new studio in my back garden (Luckily, I have a landlord who is my friend). The total cost of the new studio is £14,100 - £14,700, which includes the construction of the building, Electrical items such as lighting and heating and running power to the space safely. I have managed to borrow £10,000, which I will pay back monthly over 3+ years, but I need your help to make this a reality.
Most of the funds will be used to pay for the studio build. I have decided to go with a garden room from Bristol-based company uk work room as they build (by hand) from quality, sustainable materials.
The remaining funds will be used to cover just over 20 weeks of instalments for the £10k loan. This will ensure that I can implement adequate and regular respite periods.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Your donations will help me to secure the purchase of the new studio and, in turn, support my access needs such as:
- Work in a quiet and comfortable space (with sunlight!!!!)
- Being close to my home so I can manage my chronic health issues whilst also continuing to work more healthily.
- Allow me to access my workspace for shorter periods between rest.
- Be closer to Colin (my old little dog/ best friend)
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
- This will be the first time I have had the opportunity to invest in something that is mine.
- Owning my own space will help me to become more financially independent.
- We all know what most landlords are like…I will have an increased sense of security and safety. I will have more agency in my working environment. I will not have to worry about rent increases, surprise visits from gross landlords, etc.
- To create a space that is purpose-designed for my specific access needs.
- Having a quiet, calm space on the ground floor, with free parking, will help me accommodate my clients' access needs and my own.
- I can make a held and safer environment for clients.
