Hi, my name is Bryce Gantt, and I’m a rising fourth-year medical student at Howard University College of Medicine applying into Plastic Surgery. I’m proud to be working toward becoming the first doctor in my family; a dream I’ve poured everything into. I’m reaching out today because I need your support to cross the final, most demanding stretch of this journey.

This fall, I’ve been fortunate to secure three away rotations at top institutions in Galveston, Texas, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Tampa, Florida. Each of these four-week rotations is a vital opportunity to train with leaders in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Because Howard does not have its own plastic surgery residency program, these away rotations are my best chance to show programs who I am and what I bring to the table. They’re a chance to prove that someone with my background—without a legacy in medicine but with unmatched passion—belongs in this field.

But these opportunities come with a heavy financial burden.

I’ll need to pay for flights, temporary housing, food, and transportation in each city. On top of that, I’m preparing for Step 2, the second board exam required for residency, while managing the costs of applying to programs across the country.

I recently took a research year to strengthen my application, which meant stepping away from the usual financial aid schedule. Right now, I don’t know when I’ll receive my next disbursement, and I’m honestly just trying to figure out how to make it through the next few months.

I’ve been doing everything I can to keep up—cutting back, budgeting every dollar—but it’s been tough. There are days where I’m deciding between getting groceries, paying for transportation, or buying the study materials I need. The stress of not knowing how I’ll cover basic needs has made this already intense time even harder.

That’s why I’m reaching out to my village for help.
