My name is Bryan Chu. I have been teaching for twenty-four years. Fifteen of those years have been spent here in Portland Public Schools. During that time, I have had the honor of serving the students of Lane, Hosford, Boise Eliot-Humboldt, and Harriet Tubman Middle School. I have also been the target of ongoing bullying, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. I was wrongfully unassigned and pushed out of Lane. I was placed at Hosford against my will and put on a plan of assistance. They tried to prevent me from being hired at Boise Eliot Humboldt. At Harriet Tubman Middle School, I was removed from Core and placed in random electives against my will. I fought my way back to Core (Social Studies) and now most recently I have been placed on leave. I love my students and I love teaching. What does it say about this district when doing what is right puts you in jeopardy of losing what you love most? I didn't go into teaching to get rich and at this moment I need your help and I’m asking for your support. Your support is a statement of Solidarity with my case, but also with the principle of Free Speech, for the belief that teachers of Asian, Black, Latino and Indigenous backgrounds, regardless of gender identification, have a right to lead classrooms, and for the rights of all workers to do our work in workplaces that are safe and free from harassment, targeting, and discrimination. I know that I am not alone, but your support of even $1.00 to help pay for expenses and fees to obtain legal counsel will demonstrate your Solidarity with all of the above, with my students, and with fellow Educators, workers, and families who deserve better. No amount is too small. Thank you so much for any support you can give as my family, loved ones, and I navigate this challenging moment.
