[ENGLISH TRANSLATION DOWN BELOW]
Beste lezer,
Overzicht kosten:
● Nieuwe uitrusting (ski’s, kleding etc.)

Dear reader,
I'm Rogier and in this way I want to raise money for one of my best friends and colleagues, Bruna.
More than a year ago, Bruna escaped death in a serious accident in Italy. Bruna had qualified for the Winter Olympics in Beijing and would compete for Brazil in cross-country skiing.
Bruna grew up in Brazil and competed in mountain biking. Unfortunately, due to problems with her heart, she had to give up this sport. After an intensive surgery on her heart, Bruna no longer had the physical condition to go mountain biking and had to wait a long time to be allowed to do serious exercise again.
Bruna met someone who does cross-country skiing and offers to go with her sometime. Bruna falls in love with the sport. Unfortunately, she does not have the financial means to do this, but Bruna also lives in a place where no snow falls. Fortunately, she comes into contact with the Brazilian Federation. She gets a pair of roller skis from them, so that she can still practice the sport in a place where there is no snow. Bruna is also assigned a coach who guides her in her sport.
After seven years of training and competing, she got the good news in early 2022: she had qualified to participate in the Olympic Games in Beijing! After a tiring, but successful few months – including qualifying for the Olympics with races in Italy, Austria, Serbia and Switzerland – Bruna wanted to spend the last weeks before the travel to China in Obertilliach, in Austria, to prepare and train for the Olympics. However, one day after being officially announced as part of the Olympic team, things went wrong: a positive test for COVID-19. She had to quarantine for ten days, wasn’t allowed to train and had to hope to be testing negative in time to even go to the Olympics.
Eventually, Bruna was testing negative in time and had to travel to Munich, from where she would depart to China after a few official negative COVID-19 tests. She had to find her way to Munich by herself, so a taxi-van was booked from Obertilliach. Out of security, Bruna decided to sit in the back of the van, to keep some distance from the driver. This ended up saving her life. During the drive, things went horribly wrong: the van moved to the right, hit the guardrail and bumped back onto the road, where an oncoming truck hit them head-on. The driver died on impact, and when you see the photos, you can see only the back part is not completely destroyed.
Bruna was taken out of the car badly injured: life threatening shock, three broken ribs, her arm broken in three places, damage to her lungs and a partially shattered foot. She ended up in the hospital, her dream gone – not even mentioning the mental hit, especially once she got to know the driver’s tragic fate.
Luckily and with help of the Brazilian Federation, after two surgeries Bruna was able to get home by ‘taxi ambulance’. There, she started her long recovery process and quickly set her target for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy…not 100km from the location of the accident.
A year after the accident, Bruna is training hard again. To this day, she still has pain in her foot and her physical health has not yet fully recovered. Bruna trains with her own coach, a World Cup athlete who helps her an immense amount, but she does need to pay by herself. The federation helps in getting a basic package of equipment back together, but she will have to pay for most of her equipment and other costs herself: new top-level skis, cross-country skiing boots, entry for and travel to competitions, accommodation costs, physiotherapy, training costs and her own coach. This is mainly what the money is for.
Where does the money go:
The money will go towards buying professional equipment, accommodations, travel, competition fees and paying for services such as a coach. Below is an overview of what goes where. The money is intended to last until the 2025/2026 season. The next Winter Olympic Games will be in February of 2026.
Cost overview:
New equipment (skis, clothing, etc.): €6,000 (€2,000 per season)
Travel + Competition costs: €6,000 (€2,000 per season)
Coach: €8,000 (€200 per month)
* I will personally transfer all the money to Bruna's account.
Why am I doing this:
I have been working with Bruna at Bicycle Specialist Jacob Bonenberg in Nunspeet (The Netherlands) for almost a year now. I've been on good terms with Bruna from the start. Especially at the beginning, Bruna still used to speak a lot of English and since I also speak good English, we can communicate well.
When Bruna told how she came here and what she has been through, it touched me. The dream she has to participate in the Olympic Games was shattered by a serious accident. But what also strikes me is how optimistic Bruna is. She is hopeful that she will be able to participate again next time. As time goes by, Bruna will also train more with her coach who knows well what she can handle and what she can’t. This way, she gets a personal schedule, which Bruna follows exactly, already with good results.
When Bruna indicated that she should move her foot more, I told her about kickboxing. I have been doing that myself for a year at Tatsushin in Nunspeet, and I have never experienced such a nice atmosphere at a sports club. I therefore recommended this to Bruna for the movement, but also for the relaxed and pleasant atmosphere that’s hanging around there. Everyone knows each other and for Bruna, who still has few connections in the Netherlands, this is perfect.
So in addition to colleagues, we are also friends and sports buddies. We quickly got a group of people with whom we spend a lot of time. Bruna is getting more and more connections in the Netherlands, and I notice that this does something good to her. I see Bruna genuinely enjoying the contacts we have as a group.
Our kickboxing teacher also invited Bruna for a conversation. He more or less knew what she had been through, but wanted to get to know Bruna a little better. After the conversation, I talked to the teacher and together we got the idea to start a GoFundMe for her.
Bruna is someone who doesn't give up on her dream, gives everything she has, but perhaps even more importantly: she is someone who deserves it. Bruna is always there for anyone in need, regardless of her own situation. You can also follow Bruna's story on Instagram.
