BruinBreathe is the UCLA chapter of the Breathe Better Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to improving lung health in our community. We organize free spirometry screenings in partnership with board-certified pulmonologists, provide educational lectures at schools to raise awareness about lung health, advocate for legislative change, and conduct research at the intersection of public health and lung disease. Our mission is to make specialty pulmonary care accessible to those who need it most, especially refugees and low-income individuals who are at higher risk for chronic respiratory conditions.

Right now, we are seeking support to purchase an NDD easy on PC spirometer, a vital piece of equipment that will allow us to offer pulmonary function tests (PFTs) at our screenings. This device will add an essential layer of care to our existing process. After patients complete our screening questionnaire, those identified as good candidates will be referred for a PFT. Under the supervision of a respiratory therapist, undergraduate students will guide patients through the test, collecting data that is securely uploaded and immediately available for analysis by our on-site pulmonologists. This process enables us to diagnose and plan next steps for care right at the screening event.

The Breathe Better Foundation is the first organization of its kind, creating opportunities for everyone involved. Patients receive free access to specialty care and guidance for their next steps. Students gain invaluable experience and empathy through patient interaction, preparing them for future careers in medicine. Physicians benefit from working with a diverse patient population, expanding their diagnostic skills. Most importantly, entire communities benefit from early detection of potentially life-threatening diseases—all made possible by a single piece of equipment and a dedicated team.
