Hi, this is Michael, Bruce Derr's son. My father is gravely ill with pulmonary fibrosis and dementia and was admitted into hospice care with 24/7 caregiving at home. He had the where with all to purchase Long Term Care insurance, but "shockingly" in typical insurance fashion, the coverage is only for a maximum of $200 a day. This won't even fully cover a nursing home or memory care center, let alone 24/7 in-home care, which costs $25,000 a month ($835 a day). Unfortunately, my brother and I live in San Diego and he is no longer in condition to be able to move him long distance. Therefore, we have come to a point where we may have to make the difficult decision of taking him out of his home and putting him into a skilled nursing home environment. Of course, his wishes are to stay home, but in the condition he is in, he cannot be left without 24/7 care. We would like to abide by his wishes and keep him home, but we also don't want to bankrupt him. Anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated so that we can keep him at home as long as possible in comfort and with dignity.
