update: it's called The Howler Press now lol, we're so silly! RIP Wolf's Weekly
I’m an English teacher at a high school in Brownsville, Brooklyn NY. I teach an AMAZING group of students; they are eager, motivated, diligent, and bright as can be. And with all their brilliance they have decided to start their school’s very first newspaper and press called The Howler Press (after the school’s mascot). Founded by a small handful of seniors —whom I adore with every fiber of my being—The Howler Press is an exclusively student-led and organized press and publication.
UNFORTUNATELY, the school has VERY limited resources and funding. Brownsville has historically high rates of poverty, with figures in recent years showing a poverty rate around 39-40%. Schools in Brownsville struggle with low literacy and high rates of chronic absenteeism. After working with them for a year I know that these kids don’t have many opportunities to pursue and develop their passions and interests. That's exactly why this project means so much to them. They’re not waiting for opportunities, they’re creating them for themselves. They’re choosing to inspire the discourse and the sense of community they wish to see and desperately need in their student body.
With the passing of N.Y. Education Law 2803, which strictly prohibits any student's personal technology from entering schools, these students are turning their desire for connection back to physical media! Wolf's Weekly will provide practical experience in writing, editing, design, and distribution. The paper will release
- bi-weekly news reports about their academics, extracurriculars, and social lives
- think pieces, an advice column, a weekly horoscope, and games
- Advertisements for other events happening on campus and in Brooklyn
- And much more!
Right now they are looking towards YOU to help them actualize this project. To make Wolf's Weekly a reality, they need to pool together the funds that the school simply cannot provide in order to acquire:
- A printer fit to print on broadsheet and tabloid-size paper
- Enough ink for approximately 36 issues across the school year
- PAPER (tabloid and/or broadsheet)
Your donation doesn't just buy them supplies. It tells them that their voices matter, that their ideas are worth investing in. They are a dedicated group of kids who have done all of the groundwork by organizing themselves, developing content plans, and researching the technical requirements for their publication. Their commitment is evident and now they need yours. Please share and donate to help these students get their newspaper up and running. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
With infinite gratitude,
