When the Altadena wildfire tore through my neighborhood, smoke and toxins invaded my home.
It’s not just a house—it’s my sanctuary, my family’s safe space, and my recording studio where
I create and share the blues with the world.
My name is Yusef Hopkins-Olaitan, also known as Brother Yusef, and I’ve been a proud Altadena
resident
since 1969. I’m a blues musician, and for decades my home has been the place where I live, create,
rehearse,
and record the music I share with audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.
But after the January 2025 wildfires, that space remains unsafe—for me and for my family.
Why I Need Your Help
My insurance company only tested for lead and asbestos, then told me that was enough. They are
refusing
to authorize further testing—even though wildfires are known to leave behind much more: heavy
metals,
volatile organic compounds, and toxic combustion by-products.
These hidden toxins can linger in walls, HVAC systems, and dust, creating long-term health risks.
Without independent, comprehensive environmental testing, I can’t get full remediation—and I can’t
bring
my family safely back home.
The Goal
- Cost of independent testing: about $7,000
- Every $50–$100 helps cover one test sample
- Once testing is complete, I’ll post the results here so you can see exactly what your support achieved
If donations go beyond $7,000, the remaining funds will be used for remediation and cleanup to make
the house safe again for me and my family.
Why It Matters
This isn’t only about repairing a house. It’s about protecting health, restoring a safe home for my family,
and bringing back a creative space where music is made. It’s also about making sure wildfire survivors aren’t left with hidden toxins when insurance falls short.
Your support—whether a donation or a share—brings us one step closer to safety and restoration.
■■ Please donate if you can, and share this campaign with friends. Every dollar and every share
counts.
Much Thanks,
Brother Yusef
