Brooke, a transfemme person of color, has been preparing for this life changing gender affirming surgery for over 3 years. Brooke has experienced a heartbreaking loss and cascading financial strain. Three months ago, Brooke’ s beloved partner passed away. Valerie was meant to be Brooke’s loving caretaker during recovery and her loss has left not only a deep grief but also financial devastation. The savings Brooke had carefully set aside for surgery were used to honor Valerie’s life and solely support themselves in the midst of their grief.

Without community support, Brooke will not be able to proceed with this surgery. Missing the date would mean waiting another two and a half years, if it is possible given the escalating attacks on trans healthcare. Safe recovery requires lodging for three weeks in California, food and the financial support of getting a trusted caretaker. This surgery is essential to Brooke’s survival, dignity, and safety. Despite working tirelessly, saving ahead, applying for grants, and reaching out to organizations, Brooke has exhausted every possible resource.
