Brittney is my stepdaughter, and she’s always been someone who tries to do the right thing, even when life hasn’t made it easy. When her biological mother wasn’t able to care for her, my husband and I took her in and did our best to give her a stable home. Recently, Brittney decided to give her mom a second chance and followed her advice to use a tax preparer. Sadly, this person turned out to be dishonest, and now Brittney is facing a nightmare with her taxes.

Just a few days ago, we found out that Brittney needs to amend three years of taxes, pay for this year’s tax filing, and may owe the IRS a huge amount in back taxes and penalties. She’s only just started her career, is still paying for college every month, and has begun saving for her future with a 401K. Now, all of that is at risk if she can’t pay what the IRS says she owes. It breaks my heart to see her so scared and overwhelmed, especially after she tried so hard to do the right thing.
