Britani Lalin is a dear friend of mine, an amazing activist, a Black trans Garifuna woman, and an asylum-seeker. Having fled death threats in Honduras and survived the violence of U.S. immigration detention, Britani has been doing everything in her power over the last few years to survive and thrive while her asylum case is pending. Our short-term goal is to raise $1000 to cover her expenses for September (rent, food, utilities, internet, personal items), and longer-term goal is to raise at least $15,000, enough to cover one year of expenses.
Since Britani doesn't yet have work papers, her options for work are limited, and more so due to the pandemic. “Quiero pelear mi caso”, says Britani. “No quiero volver a Honduras para morir. Necesito un poco de ayuda, de quien pueda ayudarme." "I want to fight my case. I don't want to go back to Honduras to die. I need a little bit of help, from anyone who can help."
I first connected with Britani in December 2019, and have been continually blown away by her resilience, her creativity, and her tireless generosity, always using anything she has to help others. She has collaborated with such organizations as Black LGBTQIA Migrant Project , Familia Trans Queer Liberation Movement , and others, and her lifelong goal is work with at-risk LGBTQ youth. She also loves kids and is an amazing chef!
