When Your Coworker's a Fly
The employees at a public works department find it difficult to get along with their half-human-half-fly coworker.
This film is at heart a comedy, but also explores what it’s like to be different, the experience of being from two different backgrounds, and how to accept yourself when everyone else sees you as a freak.
The Story:
Frank, Crantz, Lina, and Paula work in a public works department alongside Doug, a half-human, half-fly hybrid. Doug’s fly tendencies cause trouble in the work space; he eats rotten food, wants trash to roam free, and spends too much time in the sewers. Doug tries to get along with everyone, but they always leave him feeling like an outcast. They gossip about him and leave him out of their after-work plans. Mark, his boss, learns more about his inappropriate behavior and ultimately fires him in front of everyone. Doug realizes that his ostracization is not because of his eccentric personality but his own race.
Statement:
Maya Grant, Torrey Garvey, and Eli Prager are three screenwriters in their sophomore year at Chapman University. Since meeting, they’ve found common ground in a unique style of comedy: a blend of the cinematic sketch-film hybrids of Almost Friday TV, the awkward characters of I Think You Should Leave, and the laugh-out-loud antics of classic films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. When Your Coworker is a Fly is a passion project for the team. It plans to draw inspiration from all the comedies they love and bring them into the movie-making culture at Chapman.
