Urge is an evening length dance work created by Shelby Bakota and India Scott, two Philadelphia based emerging dance artists. Their work will be presented in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, where both artists are presenting for the first time. The show will take place on September 5th and 6th at CHI Movement Arts center, both shows at 7pm. As choreographers and performers, both Shelby and India explore topics of feminism and loss, narrative storytelling and how it interacts with the physical body. They strive to make works that will challenge the audience into interacting with discomfort and vulnerability.
Scott’s work (“Seductive, Never Ceasing, Whispering, Clamoring, Murmuring, Inviting”) is an exploration of women in literature who were drawn to the ocean in their final moments. It largely focuses on the ideas of suffering and sacrifice. Bakota’s work (“The Search”) explores loss, replacement, discovery, and despair. Any question can be answered. “The Search” will prompt audiences to question if anything is truly lost, if we ourselves are lost, and if something lost can ever be replaced.
As these artists delve into creating their works, they also begin fundraising to support such an endeavor. In creating an evening length work, there are many expenses to be covered. Such as;
-Covering the cost of the venue
-Insuring the event
-Paying other emerging artists for their help in lighting and other tech elements
-All members of the team that help support on the evenings of the performances
-Costuming
-Advertising
-Paying the dancers that will dedicate months to learning choreography, and helping bring "Urge" to life
Any assistance in donating and supporting helps Shelby and India bring this work to the stage. This work is not done for prestige or recognition, it is done out of love and passion for the craft. They hope that other artists and supporter of the arts will help this vision come to life.
