LOGLINE:

A drummer in a small-town cover band bears the weight of his home, his friends, and his own failed ideals, until the quiet, mundane moments of a single day force a break.

SYNOPSIS:

The Yoke follows one day in the life of John, a drummer who never left his home that he once assumed he’d outgrow. Whatever dream he had of becoming something beyond his small town has already died, and what’s left in its place is a mix of self-contempt and a pathetic sense of superiority that he can’t fully justify. John spends the day with Clif and Ty, the only people still making music with him, men whose acceptance of their lives both comforts him and quietly threatens his defenses. As they move through birthday parties, parking lots, and a bar gig, the day doesn’t change John so much as expose how he’s been living with his disappointment. His anger surfaces not because something new happens, but because nothing ever does. By the time the night ends, he’s still with the band and seemingly nothing has changed, but an uncertain smile suggests that even within the weight of his own self-perceived failure, a trace of acceptance, or hope may still be possible.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:

Hello! I’m Owen Hadsell, Director of The Yoke,

The Yoke is a film born from a complicated kind of love, the kind you feel for a place that shaped you even as you tried to outrun it. It’s set and shot in the rural county of Juniata in central Pennsylvania. The film isn’t interested in caricaturing rural life or turning it into something sentimental. It’s an honest attempt to sit with the beauty and judgment, the belonging and the distance, the pride and quiet shame that live in the same soil.

This project comes from a lifelong push and pull with home. There is deep affection in it, and also frustration. The film doesn’t try to fix that tension—it holds it. That’s the point.

We’re making The Yoke with a modest budget with almost no resources beyond what we can carry, borrow, or cook ourselves. Our crew are volunteering their time. Our meals are made in family kitchens. Our locations are real places, not staged abstractions of “small-town America.” Still, there are unavoidable costs: dedicated actors, gas to get the cast and crew to set, lodging in central Pennsylvania for the shoot week, replacement props, locations, storage media, and post-production.

We’re raising $1,500 to cover only what can’t be sourced through community, barter, or labor. That money goes directly to:

Housing the crew during the December shoot

Gas and travel across rural PA

Hard drives and SSDs for footage

Location fees

Stipends for our actors

Post-production costs and festival submissions

Every dollar gets us closer to telling this story the way it deserves to be told: quietly, honestly, without pretending the place and the people are something they’re not.

If you can give $10, $50, or $100, it makes a real impact. You’re helping us make something true about where I come from and why we (the many people of Juniata) stay, and why we leave, and why we still can’t quite let it go.

Thank you for helping us bring The Yoke to life.
