Dear Friends,
The time is coming nearer when we can share The Sistering with the world. MARCH 20th the music will be released world wide on the Zenzalai Music Label! So far we have released two singles: Combat Boots and Glass Slippers, and It Had To Be You. We now have a beautiful website and Youtube page.
Our Durham CD release will be Sunday March 22nd 3-5pm at NorthStar Church of the Arts in Durham.
We're currently hiring radio and print promotion to get the music into folks' ears and hearts. And We need YOUR help!!
Help Us Bring the Sistering to Life — An Album, A songbook, A Film, A Movement!
What began as a conversation between four friends over tea has blossomed into something much bigger: a dream, a vision, a movement!
We are Kate McGarry, Nnenna Freelon, Lenora Zenzalai Helm, and Lois Deloatch — four accomplished Durham,NC based jazz vocalists, united by a shared belief: that collaboration among women is not only powerful, but essential.
Together, we've created The Sistering — a first-of-its-kind project featuring:
An album of 11 original and reimagined songs
A songbook of our original compositions
A short documentary that captures our creative process and the spirit of sisterhood
A movement that celebrates women uplifting women, creatively and soulfully
As Toni Cade Bambara reminds us,
“Sister(ing) is a verb.”
And so, we’re taking action — by showing up, standing strong, and telling a new story: one where women champion each other. We are kicking the proverbial narrative to the curb that says “Women don’t support one another.”
Why We Need You
We’ve self-funded the project so far, but to fully bring our vision to life — and to share it widely — we need your help.
Your donation will help cover:
- Studio time & rehearsal space
- Musician and production fees
- Mixing & mastering the album
- Documentary filming & editing costs
- Photos, artwork, distribution and more
- Hiring radio, social media, and print promotion
Our total estimated costs range between $30,000–$40,000. Every dollar raised will go directly toward completing the album and film, ensuring we can share this work as beautifully and powerfully as it deserves.
