In 1959, 20-year-old artist David Montalto had a divine vision: instructions for the creation of the Cross of the Cosmos, a sacred work uniting the Old and New Testaments with humanity’s cosmic journey. Ridiculed for predicting the Word of God would circle the Moon and his ideas about making the cross, he persevered for 58 years. His visions came true when Apollo 8 astronauts read from the Book of Genesis in lunar orbit in 1968, and in 2017 when he finally embedded moon dust and a fragment of the lunar landing module into this silver-and-crystal masterpiece.

Now 90, Montalto has fulfilled his life’s purpose. Consecrated at Westminster Abbey and praised by former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams as “a new message for Christendom,” the Cross of the Cosmos weaves Abraham’s sacrifice, the Holy Trinity, and the Eucharist into a vibrant symbol of faith, science, and art. “It’s not just an object” Montalto says, emotionally. “It’s a universal message that we should learn to love one another whatever our differences.”
