Slack Off is a darkly comedic and deeply personal solo show directed by Belle Flanegan that follows Penina Beede, a young American Jewish woman who experiences a manic episode, enlists in the Israeli army, and struggles to reconcile her identity, beliefs, and mental health . Although the setting of the play is inherently political, Slack Off is rooted in something more intimate: a deeply personal reckoning with identity, instability, and the search for belonging in all the wrong places.
Despite the power and relevance of this story, traditional producers and funders have been hesitant to support it due to its subject matter. That is why we are turning to you, our community and supporters, to help bring this show to life. With your help, we hope to bring Slack Off to Hollywood Fringe in June!
Your support gives us hope that making art can bring people together across a political spectrum. We believe in the power of compassion and nuanced empathy, and we want as many people as possible to experience this message. Your donation will help with travel and housing expenses, theater rental fees, and other necessities for making our show happen at Hollywood Fringe. Thank you for believing in this project and helping make it a reality.
A message from the artists:
Hello! We are Penina Beede and Belle Flanegan, writer/performer and director of Slack Off, respectively. Penina has been working on this show for five years, and Belle joined the team in March 2025. We met at The New School, where we were studying for an MA in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship. This is a passion for both of us, a true partnership as we pursue professional careers in the performing arts.
