Hello, my name is Adeena Nair! I am the director of my senior (capstone) short film, Casandro produced by Marija Krkovic.
Casandro is a 12-minute crime drama with the logline: In the shadowy world of Casandro’s cartel, a young woman struggles to manage her mother’s unforgiving expectations. When their drug shipment gets stolen, she must fulfill her communal obligations while confronting her own inner battles, torn between duty, guilt, and the choices she’s forced to make.
In today's digital age, we are moving towards a more globalized world where identity is no longer confined to a single culture, but rather a fusion of different influences. Growing up in Dubai and originating from South India, Kerala, I've been exposed to a diverse range of cultures, which has significantly shaped my perspective and enhanced my ability to empathize with others. In my work "Casandro," I explore the immigrant mother-daughter dynamic, drawing from the fusion of cultures that form the core of my identity.
Additionally, in India, there exists a prevalent misogyny that often overshadows gender equity, resulting in limited narratives about powerful women. I challenge the notion of "feminine purity" in my narrative, portraying the main characters engaging in behaviors that defy traditional feminine stereotypes. In this context, I aim to convey that in a morally ambiguous world, assertiveness and the establishment of fear are often necessary to assert authority. The mother-daughter dynamic, conventionally depicted in passive and morally righteous tones, is reimagined in my work, drawing inspiration from the spiritual concept of "Maha Kali" to explore the existence of darker feminine power within the walls of Casandro.
The immoral choices made by the women in the narrative stem from societal neglect manifested in the character of Vanya. Meanwhile, Rosalina's actions represent the impact of parental pressure, specifically from immigrant parents, on young individuals as they strive to define their own identities and values.
Rosalina’s arc, where she prioritizes her own morality over that of an immoral maternal figure, serves as a powerful testament to her bravery and self-discovery. This narrative is intended to resonate with immigrant children, encouraging them to prioritize their own well-being above societal obligations.
Ultimately, the most ethical choice is to be honest with oneself and to embrace one's imperfections.
