Help bring Ray Greiser home!

April 28, 2021 - Ray and Irene are long-time, well-loved Snowmass Village locals. My husband Phil (“Philbob”) and I also live in Snowmass Village and have been close friends with Irene and Ray for more than 30 years. With Phil’s encouragement (and Irene’s permission), I set up this GoFundMe to help Irene with some of the initial expenses of getting Ray back home from Arizona. To our amazement, this fundraiser became a wonderful way for our community, neighbors, friends and family, to lend their support to help Ray with his recovery. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness and generosity.

Ray’s rehabilitation is ongoing, and according to his brain surgeon, may take more than a year. With the guidance of our friends at Alpine Bank in Snowmass Village, Jeff Sivess and I have set up a bank account for GFM funds “For the benefit of Ray Greiser”. This account will be used to pay for any expenses not covered by Medicare and supplements. In addition to recent travel expenses, the fund will help pay for Ray’s physical, occupational and speech therapies, for professional Home Care for days when Irene is at work, for medical equipment such as a wheelchair, for prescriptions, doctor’s appointments and any essentials to help Ray feel better and get stronger. I’m also tracking all funds and expenses in a spreadsheet shared with Irene and Jeff.

So far Ray is in good spirits and all is going really well. This week is busy with appointments - Neurology, Cardiology, Ray’s first COVID-19 vaccination. I will post an update on progress this weekend. ~Amber

On behalf of Ray and Irene, I want to thank you all for your generosity. Your response has exceeded all of our expectations. You’ve shown that anything is possible when you have true friends to stand by you. Your gifts will go a long way to support Irene and Ray with his recovery. Thank you again for making a difference. ~Amber

As many of you know, Ray has COPD and in January he moved to Arizona for the winter. He was hoping to breathe more easily. In late February, Ray was unexpectedly diagnosed with a brain aneurysm that had not yet burst. He underwent emergency brain surgery (7 hours!), and soon afterward had a minor stroke and a second brain surgery. He’s been in and out of ICU, then hospital rehab, and less than 2 weeks ago, he was transferred to an Arizona skilled nursing facility.

Ray is still very confused about where he is and why... and has a long way to go for his recovery.  He cannot walk without assistance. His confusion led to a fall resulting in a compression fracture of his spine and now he must wear a brace.

This week, his wife Irene was notified the nursing facility refuses to keep Ray any longer. Irene is back in Arizona. Three Snowmass Village friends (Jeff Sivess, Philbob and Mark Stout) are driving to Arizona to help Irene bring Ray (and his truck) home.

This fundraiser is intended to help Irene cover the expenses of 2-3 days of travel to and from AZ, appropriate vehicle rental for Ray’s ride home, and any other unanticipated expenses. We love Ray and want him home safely. Any amount you might give will certainly help. Thank you all for your love and support.
