My mother is in hospice taking her last breath as I write this. Although we knew the time was coming, it still took us by surprise. She had gotten better for a while, but this week has been incredibly tough—a week of difficult decisions and final goodbyes. We have watched the strong woman who shaped us into who we are become fragile, lying in that bed.

As we prepare to say our final goodbye, my sister and I are seeking help to bring our mother back to Puerto Rico so we can put her to rest. My mother was always a giver—whenever she saw a need, she gave. She helped out all of her family in times of need and was the best daughter to her parents, always making sure they had everything they needed until their last breath.

This is difficult for me and my sister, especially as everyone is experiencing financial hardship. Although she had a life insurance policy, it will only cover part of the expenses. To get her to Puerto Rico and give her a decent funeral service, we are still short. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help us honor her life and lay her to rest with the love and respect she gave so freely to others.
