Our lovely friend and colleague Nan travelled to India for essential treatment for her lupus — treatment she has to fund privately, as the NHS does not offer this particular therapy. Her family flew out to join her and have a little holiday, then all return home together.

Their journey back to the UK began smoothly: India to Dubai went exactly as planned. But everything changed in a moment. As they arrived in Dubai for their connecting flight to Manchester, the conflict involving Iran escalated, and all flights were suddenly cancelled. With no warning, they found themselves stranded in the airport, unsure what would happen next.

After a period of uncertainty, the government arranged temporary accommodation, but there was still no safe or viable route home. Eventually, they managed to return to India in the hope of finding an alternative way back to Manchester.

After three long weeks of stress, disruption, and constant uncertainty, they finally secured flights home — but at an enormous cost. The only available route came to just under £12,000, a devastating and unexpected financial blow for any family. Their travel insurance will not cover the cost, as the disruption was caused by war — something entirely outside their control.

Nan is one of the kindest, most resilient people we know, and she has handled this ordeal with strength and grace. But no one should have to shoulder this kind of financial burden alone.
