My name is Sindy, and I am asking for help for my mom, Elia.

My mom was detained by police and subsequently placed on an ICE hold while on her way home to join my family to visit my grandmother, who was placed in hospice care, so that they could say their goodbyes. It was during this already incredibly painful time that our lives were suddenly turned upside down.

My mom is the kindest and most generous person I have ever known. She has spent her entire life putting her family before herself and making sacrifices so that her three children could have opportunities she never had.

For nearly 20 years, my mom has worked as a housekeeper. She has always worked incredibly hard to provide for our family. Some of my earliest memories are of going to work with her and "helping" her clean houses as a child. I remember watching how hard she worked while doing everything she could to give her own children a better life.

My youngest sister, Samantha, recently started college. My brother Jonathan is a bright young man with autism who relies on my mom every day. She has been his advocate, caregiver, and greatest source of support throughout his life. I am nearly 1,000 miles away in Pennsylvania, where I am finishing medical school. Although I am doing everything I can from here, being so far away from my family during this time has been incredibly difficult.

Now, our family is trying to navigate life without the person who has always been there to hold everything together. Her absence has affected every part of our lives, including our family's stability. For nearly 20 years, my mom has worked tirelessly to provide for her family, and in this situation, we are now facing uncertainty about how to manage everyday expenses while also preparing for the legal costs ahead. We are asking for help so that we can support our family through this difficult time and make sure my mom has the support she needs.
