My grandfather has been a part of the U.S. community for 56 years, building a life surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. This Christmas, he traveled to Mexico to spend the holidays with family. On December 22, everything changed—he suffered a heart attack and underwent an angioplasty. Just two days later, on Christmas Eve, he experienced a massive ischemic stroke that affected the left side of his brain. Since then, he has been in a coma, and our family has been holding onto hope every day. Today, we saw a small but meaningful sign of progress: his ventilator was turned off, and he is now breathing on his own. The doctors are monitoring him closely, and tomorrow he will have his third CT scan to check for brain swelling and to better understand the extent of the damage. The hospital where he is being treated does not accept insurance, and the medical bills are continuing to grow as we wait and hope for the best. My grandfather was the sole provider for himself and my grandmother, and this sudden crisis has left our family facing not only emotional pain but also financial hardship.
