In the beginning of 2025, my father and I had planned to travel to Kenya. He had not seen his family in over 10 years, and I had never met his side of the family. It was a meeting of our dreams, and we were both excited to travel together. Unfortunately, in late January, we received the news that he was battling squamous cell carcinoma, a type of throat cancer. This, of course, put an end to our plans as we focused on his healing journey. After many tests and doctor visits, we learned that the cancer was quite advanced. It was heartbreaking to witness, as the tumors in his throat stopped his ability to talk or eat, and his health declined rapidly. My father was a warrior—his life had brought him many obstacles, but he always overcame them with courage and determination. We encouraged each other to do all we could to fight the disease that was so forcefully trying to take over his mind and body. I could see how discouraged he became at the thought of not being able to return home, and he even began to lose hope in his treatment. In September, we learned the cancer had spread to various places, treatment was no longer working, and he was in a lot of pain. A week before Thanksgiving, he passed quietly in his home. His final wishes were to be cremated and taken back home to Kenya, as he had intended before the tragic news. I am his only child. I never imagined visiting his home without him physically by my side, but now I must be brave and take him back home. Please help me do this one last thing for my Baba, or as he liked to be called, Bwanakubwa, which means 'Big Boss.'
