Help With Milo's Care
Hi! My name is Lizzy and I'd like you to meet Milo! He is a six year-old Norwegian Forest Cat who loves faucets, bathtubs, cuddling, and his two big sisters - Leila and Sadie. Milo's story began in Kansas city where he was found roaming the streets as a stray kitten at 4 months. It was love at first sight with this little guy.
You'll often see him tucked away in the closet in my laundry hamper, or in the bathtub eagerly anticipating drips from the faucet! However, he never fails to greet me at the door the moment I walk in from work. He always makes the end of the day happy.
Milo unexpectedly took a turn for the worse. Over the past few months he has rapidly lost weight and was originally diagnosed with cystitis mid-February. He continued to get worse and on March 14th he began vomiting and I brought him to the emergency vet. From there they ran some tests and found that his kidney numbers were really high. He was initially treated for an infection and provided with supportive care. We were sent home on the 17.
Unfortunately despite following the recommendations of the veterinarian which involved giving him antibiotics at home and subcutaneous fluids daily he continued to decline. I brought him back to the emergency vet on the 20th for another assessment. I was told that he needed the addition of an appetite stimulant and scheduled anti-nausea medications. We again tried to manage everything at home but he continued to decline. On the 22nd we checked his kidney function and he had gotten much worse, warranting a hospitalization. He was initiated on IV therapies and this time transferred to internal medicine from the emergency service with a vet nephrologist on service. We proceeded with a kidney biopsy and he received an esophageal tube to help him with his calories and medication administration.
UPDATE 4/14:
Milo’s biopsy came back significant for immune glomerulonephritis. He was initiated on steroids and immune suppression on the 30th. Unfortunately he was not covered for infection and he was not on adequate stomach support for these rough medications. Milo is currently in the ICU with septic shock due to a gastrointestinal bleed and infection. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him. Many of the complications he endured during his recent hospital stays on 4/2-4/4 and beginning 4/9-current were due to negligence. Labs were overlooked, symptoms were overlooked, the management was reactive rather then proactive. He simply doesn’t have the reserve for such errors.
Milo means the world to me. He makes studying, nights, mornings, and baths better. I would feel very empty without him. He got me through my medical education and several years of a medical residency. I am still a resident, and I struggle financially like many medical residents. Milo's care up to this point has totaled 18K.
We don't know how much time I have left with him, but I want to give him the best care. Please donate what you can.
Thank You,
Lizzy, Milo, Sadie, and Leila <3
