Support Kim Gates After the Passing of Her Husband, Martin Gates
Many of you know Kim and Martin Gates, their love of horses, their generosity, and the quiet life they built together on their beautiful farm in Georgia.
On November 15th, Martin passed away after a long and difficult fight with Guillain Barré Syndrome. He gave absolutely everything he had to his recovery, and Kim was with him through every part of the journey. His loss has left Kim heartbroken, overwhelmed, and trying to navigate a life that has changed in ways she could never have imagined.
Remembering Martin
Martin spent five months fully conscious yet paralyzed from the neck down, and four of those months breathing on a ventilator. During the majority of that time, he was unable to speak and communicated only through blinking and nodding. Even under those incredibly difficult circumstances, he showed remarkable strength, patience, and a quiet determination that touched every doctor, nurse, and caregiver who met him.
And then, for a while, there was real hope.
The GBS had finally begun to reverse. Martin had moved into rehab and was learning how to use his body again. His spirit returned. His humor returned. He was talking, laughing, making jokes, and having full conversations. For the first time in months, he felt like himself again.
Martin and Kim talked every day about getting him home. They knew it would take time, hard work, and a long rehabilitation, but they were ready. After everything he had overcome, they were preparing for him to come home and heal in the sunshine of their beautiful farm, surrounded by the animals he loved.
Then things changed very suddenly.
A blood clot caused a massive heart attack. Kim had just left the hospital when a nurse called and asked her to come back right away. His passing was quick, unexpected, and deeply devastating.
Martin was a gentle soul who loved Kim, their animals, and the peaceful life they created together on their 10 acre farm with their four horses, their Aussie named Dawson, four cats, and chickens roaming the yard. His absence is immeasurable.
The Reality Kim Faces Now
Kim and Martin shared their home, their work, and every part of their daily life. Now Kim is facing all of this on her own.
She has also lost half of their household income, since Martin’s farrier work was a major part of their financial stability. She needs time and support to understand how to supplement her income while caring for the animals and maintaining their home and land.
There are also medical expenses, memorial costs, and daily needs that come with this sudden and heartbreaking transition.
Kim will also need help maintaining the farm. If you live nearby and are able to assist, please reach out to her directly and let her know how you can help. She especially needs support with tasks such as fence repair, basic farm upkeep, and caring for the horses when she is traveling for work. Even small acts of help will make a meaningful difference as she navigates this new chapter.
This fundraiser is here to help ease some of that immediate strain so that Kim can grieve, heal, and begin to rebuild.
