For anyone coming to this page for the first time, we want to explain clearly what has happened to Markus, where things stand today, and why we are asking for your help.

What Happened

On July 15, while visiting family in Salt Lake City, Markus was taken into immigration custody. Since then, he has been transferred between detention facilities and is currently being held in California while his immigration case continues.

For more than a month, Markus has been separated from his family, friends, work, and the life he built for himself. His ability to communicate with the people supporting him has been limited, and the uncertainty of not knowing what comes next has taken an enormous emotional and physical toll.

Where Things Stand Now

On August 14, Markus appeared before an immigration judge for a bond hearing. We had hoped he would be permitted to return home while continuing to fight his case, but his request for release on bond was denied.

That decision was heartbreaking, but it is important to clarify something that has understandably caused confusion: the denial of bond did not decide Markus’s underlying immigration case. The bond hearing addressed whether he could be released from detention while his case continues. His immigration case is still ongoing, and we are continuing to fight for the best possible outcome.

For now, Markus remains detained.

Why We Are Asking for Help

When we first created this fundraiser, we hoped Markus would be home quickly. Unfortunately, this process has become longer, more complicated, and more expensive than any of us anticipated.

Markus is unable to work or support himself while detained, and the legal expenses associated with continuing his case are significant. There are also ongoing costs related to supporting him while he remains in custody and preparing for whatever comes next.

At this point, we do not know exactly what Markus’s next chapter will look like or where it will take place. What we do know is that he will need help getting there.

Funds raised will help with:

• Legal fees and expenses related to his ongoing immigration case

• Essential costs associated with supporting Markus while he remains detained

• Expenses necessary to help him transition and rebuild once his case is resolved

• Travel, relocation, and other immediate needs that may arise depending on the outcome of his case

About Markus

Those who know Markus know him as far more than someone caught in an immigration case. He is a coach, a fighter, a friend, a son, a brother, and someone who has spent years pushing and supporting the people around him.

It is incredibly difficult to see someone who is normally so strong and independent suddenly unable to control even the most basic parts of his own life.

We wish we could tell you exactly when this will end or what the outcome will be. We can’t. What we can do is continue showing up for Markus, making sure he has proper legal representation, and helping him prepare for whatever comes next.
