I just want to update this page by saying that Maureen Sweeney is going to be the beneficiary/manager of this fund. As most of you know Maureen is the sister of Mark.
Where do I even start? Mark went on a solo trip to Bangkok, Thailand for a medical treatment to help with the continued pain he suffers in his back. After having the treatment done last Sunday he traveled on to the island of Ko Samui. As he was traveling around the island on a motor scooter he was involved in a terrible accident of which there is a police report indicating he was hit by a car.
One of his sisters received a call from the American Embassy in Thailand which is how the family was notified.
He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent a 12-hour brain surgery for a subdural hematoma. He also suffered a broken clavicle and 6 broken ribs. He has a drain in both his brain from the surgery and in one of his lungs from a rib puncture. Presently he is still suffering from varying degrees of memory loss and desperately wants to leave the hospital. He doesn't know where he is or why he is there or even how he got there.
Mark will have to stay in the hospital for at least 2 weeks after the drain is removed from his brain and the hospital bill has to be paid "DAILY"! Some of the money will go towards this expense of which we have no idea how much this will end up being. As he went by himself, family members have gone to be with him. Unfortunately, they can not stay the whole time he is there which means others will be going and the funds raised will also help to relieve some of the expense of air travel, hotel, food, etc. In cases like this, it is recommended to not travel by air for at least 4-6 weeks, after a brain injury due to the increased altitude pressure, so the bills even though he may get out of the hospital, will continue to grow because he will need a place to stay and eat, etc. Once he get's home there will be additional expenses for rehab, daily expenses, medical etc.
If there is any way in your heart that you can reach out with a monetary gift right now it would be greatly appreciated by both Mark and his family. The need is URGENT as I said before because of the need to pay the hospital daily.
Mark has done so much and has given so much over the years to his friends, his family, to the Shenandoah Valley Academy and his church. So now is an opportunity to give back to him.
