UPDATE: First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has supported this project. Because of your generosity we were able to fairly compensate cast and crew members who helped bring this idea to life. That alone means more to us than we can express.
One unexpected challenge we encountered was the need for an additional shoot day, as our production days ran longer than originally planned. As a result, the funds we raised went entirely toward covering production and paying those on set, leaving us without the budget we had planned for post-production.
While this has been a learning experience in the indie filmmaking process, we’re incredibly encouraged by what we’ve captured so far. Also, we’re excited to be in talk of a collaboration with a professional post-production company to elevate the film’s look and sound to truly do the story justice.
If you’re able to continue supporting us, we would be deeply grateful. Your belief in this project helps us cross the finish line and create something we can all be proud of. Thank you again for being part of this journey.
Hello, I’m Darren Haskins — indie filmmaker and storyteller of the ages ;)
To see past work check out:
I’ve always believed that filmmaking isn’t just about making movies — it’s about creating connection. It’s about turning a thought into a feeling, a story into a shared experience. That’s why I’ve dedicated my life to this craft.
This film is a reflection of growth, resilience, and the messy, beautiful chaos of being human. Right now, I’m inviting you to help bring my newest comedy short film, MAN GETTING HIT BY LIFE, to the big screen.
This project isn’t just about one filmmaker, it’s about building a community of people who believe in the power of independent storytelling.
WHAT THE FILM IS ABOUT
This story follows Boston Bob, a quick-witted East Coaster living in Los Angeles with his family. Unexpectedly losing his job plunges him into depression, and the lure of opioids becomes a dangerous temptation once again.
But instead of giving in, Bob dives into something equally unpredictable: the stock market. In one wild day of trading, his emotions rise and crash like the market itself. It’s funny, raw, and deeply human — a reminder that sometimes we have to get hit by life to wake up to what really matters.
WHY WE’RE MAKING THIS FILM
At its heart, this story is about addiction, struggle, faith, and hope — about the battle between who we were and who we’re trying to become.
We all experience those moments where life knocks us down and we have to choose: stay numb or fight to rebuild. MAN GETTING HIT BY LIFE explores those moments through humor and truth because sometimes laughter is what helps us heal and Kindness IS always the Cure!
JOIN OUR COMMUNITY
We’re building something special — a movement of 2,500+ people coming together, one dollar+ at a time(apologies as gofundme has $5 minimum donation).
Whether you’re family, a friend, or a stranger who loves great storytelling, you’re part of this vision. Every bit of support counts — a donation, spreading the word, or lending your energy and belief. Together, we’re showing that independent film can thrive through community, not corporations.
This is more than a fundraiser — it’s an invitation to come along for the ride. We’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes moments, updates, and the creative process every step of the way.

INSPIRATION
This film draws inspiration from my own life, from the experiences of our lead actor Chris Mastaj, an unforgettable Simpsons episode, and the tones of The Wolf of Wall Street and Vegas Vacation — all colliding into one comedic, emotionally honest story about surviving the hits, finding hope again, and reaping what we sow.
ON THE TEAM
Writer/Director/Producer - Darren Haskins
Lead Actor - Chris Mastaj
Director of Photography - Joseph Bacelis
Sound and Editing - Nathaniel Clute
WHERE THE FUNDS WILL GO
We’re committed to making sure everyone helping bring our vision to life is properly rewarded. Every dollar goes straight into the project and directly supports the talented people working behind the scenes.
Those of us initially involved are already investing our own money to help get this project started but looking to cover the costs of
- Assistant Cameraman
- Make Up Artist
- Grip & Electric
- Two Actors
- Assistant Director
- Set Designer
- Props
- Sound
This will be a two day shoot in Redondo Beach, CA. Anything over our goal will go towards post production of editing sessions, special effects, soundtrack, movie poster, and graphic designer which adds up to another $2500.
BE A PART OF THE JOURNEY
If you’ve ever been knocked down and gotten back up, this film is for you. If you’ve ever struggled with addiction, or know someone who has, this story is for you. If you believe in stories that make you feel something, this project is for you. And if you want to help bring a film to life — one dollar at a time — we’d love for you to join us.
Let’s make MAN GETTING HIT BY LIFE together!
"Everybody deserves a second chance."
-Chris
