STORY
Maggie is a youngish woman who is dumped by her long-term boyfriend who is being radicalized by the alt-right algorithm. We watch on our phones as she is herself seduced, used, and discarded by the far-right movement.
WRITERS STATEMENT
I have always considered myself open-minded, especially when it came to love, but even I was shocked to one day find myself a leftist to be in love with a conservative man. While this love was true and sweet and gifted me with a deeper, more vibrant understanding of life, it also made me insecure, fawning, and dishonest about who I am and what I believe. When the relationship ended, I was forced to come face to face with the ways I had humiliated and short-changed myself to keep love. I began to deep dive into the alt-right community online. I wanted to understand what made a person choose this belief system over a woman that loves them. Are they afraid? Are they easily manipulated? How responsible is social media for the clawing hatred that grows in a person’s heart? And what gets pushed out in the process? @maggiethinksthat is how I processed the darkness I could sink to if I continued to chase a love that did not allow room for my full self.
PRODUCER STATEMENT
@MaggieThinksThat is a multiplatform TV show that begs the question - what kind of person falls for the alt-right algorithm? And how do you love them? In the creation of @MaggieThinksThat we look to engage the audience in the larger discussion surrounding social engagement and our susceptibility to pernicious influence in our desire to be wanted.
