My name is Cory Cooper, and together with my wife Anna, we are fighting for custody of my soon-to-be 8-year-old nephew, Maddox. My brother Matt is currently experiencing a serious mental health crisis and was recently incarcerated. Because he was unable to properly care for Maddox, CPS removed him from the home for his safety. Matt stated in his absence he would want me or our mother to care for his son, and in 2021, he prepared a notarized letter confirming this wish.

Maddox has lived in New York with my brother and his girlfriend for most of his life. We have a stable, loving home with two incomes and plenty of room in our hearts and home for Maddox. With us, Maddox would have a large support system from his blood family, surrounded by cousins and relatives, and receive constant and consistent care. We are willing to seek out any counseling or support Maddox may need during this tough time. My wife works from home, and we both work for reputable companies. We believe placement with kinship is clearly in Maddox’s best interest, and we are committed to honoring my brother’s wishes while providing Maddox with the security, love, and stability he deserves.

I’ve been representing myself through three hearings to save money, but the judge has strongly suggested I obtain legal counsel before the next appearance on May 26th. We are raising funds to cover legal fees so we can move forward effectively in court.
