This GoFundMe has been set up to raise essential funds for the 450 dogs in our shelter, specifically to help cover the cost of transporting them to safety. 

These funds allow us to get our oldest, most vulnerable, and most urgent cases into foster homes in the UK. 

Fostering gives dogs the opportunity to experience life outside the shelter while dramatically increasing their chances of finding a loving forever home. Many dogs who would otherwise spend the rest of their lives in the shelter have gone on to be adopted thanks to foster care. 

Each donation helps cover the costs of travel preparation, vaccinations, health testing, veterinary care, export paperwork, and transport. Together, we can help more dogs leave shelter life behind and start the happy, secure future they deserve.

Back in July 2024, Turkey passed a new law that drastically changed how stray dogs are managed. Previously, the country followed a Catch–Neuter–Return approach, where dogs were neutered, vaccinated, and then safely returned to their original areas. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.

Under the new regulations, all stray dogs must now be captured and kept in shelters until they are adopted. While this might sound positive at first, the harsh reality is that Turkey has an estimated 4 million stray dogs, yet the country’s shelters can only accommodate around 100,000 dogs in total, which is just 2–3% of those in need. The result? Many dogs face euthanasia simply because there is nowhere for them to go. It is crucial now more than ever, that we get as many dogs out of Turkey as possible. 

Sarah’s Private Dog Sanctuary is one of the few private shelters across Turkey fighting to give these dogs a safe and loving environment while working tirelessly to find them forever homes.
