Help Bring Hyena’s Trail to the Stage – Support Black Indie Theatre in Edmonton
We are excited to share that Hyena’s Trail, a magical and deeply moving new play rooted in East African folklore, will have its official premiere June 20–27, 2025 at Workshop West Theatre in Edmonton!
Written by emerging playwright Kijo Gatama, Hyena’s Trail began in 2020 in a program called The Creative Incubator led by Mukonzi Musyoki. Since then, it has undergone multiple evolutions—from an online reading with Upintheair Theatre in 2022 to a workshop production at Nextfest in 2023—and now, it’s finally making its full debut.
About the play:
Rooted in East African mythos, Hyena’s Trail surprises with the nature of the hyena while exploring themes of sisterhood, matriarchy, inherited dreams, grief, and new beginnings. It’s a magical, heartfelt journey that blends folklore, memory, and imagination.
Produced by Here For: Fear Collective, this indie company champions vulnerable, fear-themed works by BIPOC artists.
Our Goal
We’re seeking $2000 to cover the essentials:
- Artist Fees
- Rehearsal and venue rental
- Set, props, and costume design
Theatre is an expensive art form that requires many working parts and people to be supported. There is no overhead here—every dollar you give goes straight to the production. Any surplus will cushion unexpected costs and ensure everyone involved is supported throughout the process.
Our fundraiser event Hyena Jam, was a huge success, and we were able to make half the mark. We thank those involved in getting us there now, we are looking out to our community to help us reach the finish line!
