Help bring Flamingo to the screen!

Hello Potential Patrons of the Arts, Comedy Connoisseurs, and Everyone Who’s Ever Tripped Over Their Own Two Feet,

I'm Sarah Avilés, the writer and director of Flamingo. Along with my amazing team, we're on a mission to produce a short film that’s essentially the love child of slapstick comedy and BDSM. It's a Latino-led production that stumbles—quite literally—into the world of chronic pain, disability bureaucracy, and the quest for empowerment in the most embarrassing situations. Imagine if Lucille Ball had to navigate the DMV on crutches, but with more pleather and an accidental whip crack to the face. That’s Flamingo.

Why Donate to a Film About a Dominatrix on Disability?

The healthcare system is broken in this country, honey! Did you know that you can't earn ANY money while waiting for a decision on your disability application? This often means waiting weeks, or even months, for any financial support. As someone who’s been navigating the labyrinthine joy of the disability system and multiple surgeries for almost two years, I'm incredibly thankful for the support of friends and family who've helped me weather these challenging times. However, not everyone is as fortunate. This includes Valeria, the protagonist of Flamingo, who finds herself three months behind on rent with a broken leg, teetering on the brink of eviction. Desperate for income, she ventures into the uncharted territory of a dominatrix, only to discover she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

  • My first surgery (December 2022)

I'm weaving threads of my own ridiculous journey with chronic pain and the bureaucratic bingo of the disability system into this story. Flamingo isn’t just a film; it’s a cathartic release for anyone's that's had to deal with the Kafkaesque disability and unemployment system.

What Will Your Donation Do?

Your generosity will fuel the chaos—in a good way! Funds will cover everything from ensuring our cast and crew are fed, renting equipment, and getting some good hard drives to make sure nothing happens to our beloved film after we wrap filming. And since we're all about authenticity here, a portion of your donations will also go towards purchasing the most flamboyantly pink leg cast you’ve ever seen!

Your Name Onscreen

Our team is mighty...but small. On top of day jobs and our personal lives, we're putting all our extra time and energy into making this film. So as a token of appreciation, all donors will see their name in the credits. In addition to the universe bestowing good karma upon you (karma not guaranteed), you'll eventually be able to point to Flamingo and tell people, “I funded that!” We hope the film will be a hit at film festivals with its unique blend of humor, heart, and a hint of masochism (the good kind). For donors based in Los Angeles, we will invite you to the in person premiere!

Why Support Us?

Because in a world where everywhere you look there's doom and gloom, we’re offering you a chance to support something that’s unabashedly fun, a little bit naughty, and just a tad sentimental. We have an incredible group of people gathered that are ready to make this film come to life. All we need is you! Help us make Flamingo, and let’s flip the script on misfortune... mischievously.

With the utmost gratitude and a limp,

Sarah Avilés
