Davy Duncan set off to work on February 7th 2021 in Mexico. It was anticipated it was likely to be a short trip!
On board the ship on February 19th he tested positive for covid and was taken off the ship a couple days later to isolate at an apartment under the watchful eye of the company doctor.
He deteriorated quickly and was admitted to a local hospital where he could not be stabilised and put into and induced coma on February 28th.
He was then moved to a hospital some hours away to receive specialist care in ICU.
He spent 2 months there, fighting for his life often. Covid caused lots of complications including various organ failures, a number of bacterial infections and numerous strokes.
He received round the clock care there and went through numerous treatments including dialysis. He was also very short of blood due to it being attacked through covid and ICU associated bacteria. Unlike the U.K. blood was not readily available and was an ordeal to obtain what was needed. Sufficient was sourced and he was stabilised enough to allow him to be flown back to an ICU unit at a U.K. hospital.
Nine months later he is still in hospital where he is having to relearn to do many things including walking. He is improving but the level of recovery is unknown.
His home is not suitable as accessible housing at this time and requires an extension added to make a bedroom and wet room for him and equipment needed to move him about. As there is no way to adapt the current rooms an extension is the only solution we have been told. He is not suitable for stair lift as he cannot sit on one unaided and therefore not safe for him and not recommended by occupational therapy. Adding an extension would appear to mean that grants are not available through the government as this would add an extra room therefore, adding value and grants are not approved for this. Of course, we are fighting this as no other option is possible!
Due to lack of builders and materials this will take some time and occupational therapy has recommended moving to accessible housing meantime. Sadly nothing is currently available.
