Disclaimer: If you share this page, please do not post anything critical of any governments, as this is still an active and ongoing legal matter. Please be respectful, kind, and mindful that public commentary can impact Abdulla while he navigates a sensitive military judicial process.
This fundraiser has been created to support Abdulla Dashwood and his husband, Tyler, during an ongoing legal situation that has left Abdulla unable to return home to Canada.
Abdulla is a Canadian citizen and public servant who works for the British Columbia government with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
Earlier this year, Abdulla travelled to the United Arab Emirates for what was meant to be a short visit with family. While attempting to return home to Canada, he was stopped at the airport, detained, and placed under a travel ban related to a mandatory military service issue that arose years after he had permanently left the country.
Abdulla moved to Canada when he was 17 years old and has lived there since 2004. Canada is his home. He and his husband, Tyler, have been together for over 20 years and have built their entire life together in British Columbia.
Since being prevented from leaving the UAE, Abdulla has been required to remain in the country while his case proceeds through a military court process.
On April 6, Abdulla attended in person and formally renounced his prior UAE citizenship. His lawyer also submitted evidence showing that Abdulla had continuously lived in Canada for more than 23 years and that the last time he entered the UAE was in 2006, before mandatory military service became law.
On April 23, a military court judge ruled a full acquittal in his case. However, on May 7, one day before the decision was set to become final, the military prosecutor filed an appeal.
This situation has created enormous emotional and financial pressure for Abdulla and Tyler.
Because Abdulla cannot return to Canada, his employment has been disrupted and he is currently on leave without pay. At the same time, they remain responsible for their mortgage and regular living expenses back home in BC. They are also facing growing legal costs as they continue trying to resolve the case so that Abdulla can safely return home.
This prolonged uncertainty, isolation, and legal limbo has been incredibly difficult. Abdulla and Tyler never imagined facing something like this. They are doing everything possible to resolve the situation properly and respectfully, but the emotional and financial strain has become overwhelming. Abdulla has also been struggling with the mental health impact of this prolonged ordeal.
Funds raised through this campaign will help cover:
• Legal expenses related to the ongoing court proceedings
• Mortgage payments and living expenses in BC
• Travel and administrative costs connected to resolving the case
• Basic financial stability while Abdulla is unable to return to work normally
If you are able to support Abdulla and Tyler, even a small contribution means more than words can express. And if you are unable to donate, simply sharing this page would make a tremendous difference.
Thank you for standing with Abdulla and Tyler and helping bring Abdulla home to Canada. ❤️
